Budget AND Rental-Friendly Décor Ideas

Living Room in Van Nuys Rental with Colorful Rug and CouchAs a renter, you do still want your rental home to become a pleasant and private space. Though there often isn’t much you can do about things like wall color and flooring (unless you get permission from your Van Nuys property manager to change them!), there are still lots of things you can do to add style and character to your home. The nice thing is that it doesn’t cost much to decorate a rental home. You need a few key elements and an acceptable amount of time to bring your vision to life. Here are a few simple ways to decorate your rental home on a budget.

Make the Most of Accent Pieces

If your rental home is like most others, you’ve got white or neutral walls. As some may consider this gloomy, you may want to think of it as a blank canvas instead, and what you can add to make the space your own. For example, add a touch of drama to any large wall with oversized wall art.  Or, create a gallery wall with your favorite photos or framed prints. Accent pieces can help you turn your rental house into a home, whether on the wall or somewhere else.

Add Character with Window Coverings

Window coverings are another great way to bring style and character into any room. Curtains, blinds, and shades all come in endless colors and materials and can be combined to create custom looks. Regardless of your chosen style, you can find window coverings that will include charm and appeal to your entire rental house.

Invest in Quality Furniture

If you plan to spend money on anything, focus on buying quality pieces of furniture. Your furniture goes with you everywhere, and quality furniture will look better longer, unlike the cheap stuff. In particular, consider investing in a stylish sofa and a quality mattress. If you can’t afford to buy anything else, these two items will last for years and help you feel the comfort of home.

Accessorize with Personality

One place where you can easily save money on your decorations is when accessorizing. You may find some great budget décor items by shopping at thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales. Items purchased in these areas are also often more unique and have more personality than anything you could buy in a store. Add some colorful throw pillows and a pretty rug to your main living space for immediate style. Or, shop for an ornate mirror or some baskets for your bedroom or bathroom.

Bring in Natural Elements

Another great way to decorate a rental home on a budget is to bring in live plants or other natural elements. Fresh greenery looks beautiful and can help freshen the air inside your home. Potted plants can be positioned in many good-looking ways, and a large potted palm or tree can add drama to any room.

Style Bookshelves

Ultimately, suppose you’ve got bookshelves anywhere in your rental home. In that case, you can use them not only for storage but to create a visually appealing display of all your favorite volumes and knickknacks. Even framed photographs and keepsakes can look great when arranged artfully on a bookshelf. Style your bookshelves by grouping things, placing books both vertically and horizontally, or alternating books with other display items. You can let your personality shine by putting all of your favorite things on display in your home.
