When the time comes to say goodbye to your favorite old sweater, it could be tough to let go. The incredible thing is that even if you can’t wear your sweater any longer, you don’t have to give it up! As another option, consider upcycling your sweater into something else with a fun do-it-yourself project. We’ve created a set of some simple, creative ways to repurpose old sweaters into things you can use all winter long!
Cozy mittens. Making a pair of warm winter mittens out of an old sweater is simple and entertaining! Just outline your hands in chalk around the bottom edge of a sweater, leaving the outline approximately 1/4 inch bigger than your hand. After that, cut out the pieces. Ultimately, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving the bottom edge open. Flip your new mittens right side out and enjoy!
Decorative pillow. Nothing says comfy like a sweater-covered decorative pillow for your North Hollywood home! To make a pillow out of an old sweater, simply utilize a pillow for reference and cut the sweater to size. Next, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving enough room on one side to place the pillow inside. Lastly, stitch the opening shut and add buttons or other embellishing components.
Fingerless gloves. Another great way to repurpose an old sweater is to use it to craft fingerless gloves! Both stylish and functional, a pair of fingerless gloves can help you stay warm in cold weather while allowing you to type or swipe on your phone. Start by cutting the sleeves off the sweater to any height you want. Then make a hole for your thumbs. That’s it! Cute fingerless gloves you can enjoy all season!
Boot toppers. One more styling option for upcycling an old sweater is to produce some pretty boot toppers. Boot toppers can help keep your legs warm and protect your legs from rough seams or zippers. To produce boot toppers, simply cut the upper sleeve off an old sweater long enough to fit your calf and then fold the extra material over the top of your boot.
Headband. A headband is another simple and adorable craft you can produce from an old sweater. You may create your headband as thin or as wide as you want it to be or make more than one for more options. Begin by cutting a strip from the sweater to the appropriate width, then stitch the ends together to fit your head. Warmth and elegance in an instant!
Pocket hand warmers. One helpful thing you can take with you to stay warm in cold weather is a pocket hand warmer. To generate one out of a sweater, cut several squares from a sweater arm or band, turn inside out, and stitch up the sides. Create one little opening and fill with dried beans, lentils, or pie weights. You can also add buckwheat and dried lavender for a pleasant smell. Ultimately, close the opening, heat in the microwave, and slide into a pocket for toasty warm fingers!
Smartphone case. The likelihood is that your personal tech gadgets don’t like being cold any more than you do! Protect them and repurpose an old sweater simultaneously by making a simple smartphone or tablet case. Trace your tech device with chalk on the sweater, then turn inside out and sew, leaving one edge open. For an attractive and functional result, add a button or other decoration.
Sweater wreath. Upcycled sweaters can be both stylish and functional when you make a fun sweater wreath for your home. Using a foam or other wreath form, cut and sew your old sweater around the form to make a beautiful wreath. With the addition of some gorgeous ribbon or other decorative touches, you’ll have a wreath you can enjoy all season long – and beyond!
